Specific Heat and Effects of Pairing Fluctuations in an
Ultracold Fermi Gas in the BCS-BEC Crossover Region
Keio University Department of Science and Technology
We investigate the effects of pairing fluctuations on the specific heat of an ultracold Fermi gas above the superfluid phase transition temperature Tc across the entire BCS(Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC(Bose-Einstein Condensation Crossover) region, utilizing a strong coupling Gaussian fluctuation theory. We have showed previously that the specific heat shows the characteristic Bose like structure (amplification close to the critical temperature) when the coupling between the particles is strong enough for the Fermionic pairs to form molecular bosons. This structure however disappeared when we lower the interaction strength, and reappeared in the crossover region where we argued that the amplification has a different physical origin, pertaining to strong pairing fluctuations near Tc. In this talk we show explicitly that there are no stable molecular bosons in the crossover region that could give rise to this anomalous amplification of the specific heat near T_c, and that it is thus completely fluctuation induced.
